By: Jothiganesh Subramaniam (Flight Operations)

As I was browsing the net in my room while having my coffee, I came across a competition on getting a shot at being a pilot by blogging. I put my coffee aside, looking up to a Boeing 747 giant poster up on my wall and I wonder “why I wanted to be a pilot.” That thoughts brings me back to my younger days, an active kid with many dreams. Talking about it, I remember how much I wanted to be a Police Officer (like my dad), Computer Engineer, Lecturer. I even at once thought of becoming a Lawyer. But somewhere deep inside me, I always wanted to be a Pilot. I’ve imagined this for as long as I can remember. But with no proper guidance, it was a lil’ hard for me to achieve my dream then. So, to cut the story short, I quit from what I was doing (I’m a computer engineer by qualification) and got into flying (2003). Even though people thought I was insane, I’ve made up my mind and there's no turning back. I joined Malaysia Airlines as part of the World Best Cabin Staff. As they say, the rest was HIStory...

19 MAY 2003 was the date I become part of MH in "Malaysia Airlines Flight Operation” as a Cabin Crew. During my 4 months initial training in Malaysia Airlines Academy, I learn that there was lots more than what meets the eye. 3 years of flying thru out 6 continents around the globe; I made so many new friends with different characters and attitude from every walk of life with stories that for some, can only be seen on the silver screen. The valuable experience with MH had taught me a lot about life, love, family, careers, business and lots more.

While many others people and department are actually involved, The Hero or Movie star of an air transport are those visible to the public. The pilots. This highly trained professionals takes a multimillion dollar machine, casually flies it off the ground and then safely returns it, fascinates me. We can always buy tickets to fly from point A to B. But the feeling of flying the aircraft your self and getting paid well to do it is priceless. Every time I walk into to an aircraft, I never fail to peek at the cockpit to keep my spirits sky high and the biggest question at that time, “Is it possible to be a pilot from who I am now?”, “How am I gonna do it?”. I do get “Aren’t happy with yr job now?”, “You gonna waste yr time, don’t bother trying”, “It gonna cost u a bomb” kinda questions, but I was too determined to give up. Nevertheless, I do meet many very encouraging and aspiring people in our MH family it self who made it big in their way, sharing their ideas. This people are living idols to me. They keeps my interest burning in me.

I wasn’t born with silver spoon in my mouth; self funding for a Commercial Pilot License is a big NO and I love MH to much to leave them. MH was best thing ever happened to me. The end of my bond for cabin crew was approaching and I saw a light at the end of the tunnel, Malaysia Airlines advertisement for pilot. I couldn’t be happier. I waited 2 long years for this. I Begin my steps towards the path I’ve been in love with, to be a pilot. I began my preparation equip with all the right Qualification, Information, Knowledge and Courage to pursue my life long dream. I left the rest to the all mighty because I believe he brought me to MH for a reason and he'll decide what's best for me ...

....As I’m getting quite busy with my training at the moment, I’ll see u guys in the second part of this blog soon to tell you more of my story...

I was asked a few days ago a question no one has ever asked me before, 'What is the one thing attractive about Jothi? What do you admire about him?'. Something I've never pondered upon although I've known him for years, I answered almost immediately..'His determination in life to achieve anything his heart desires'. That's one true quality of his I truly salute to, and the hard work and effort he contributed/contributes to his pilot training is what you call dedication! I know what and how much this means to him and it means ALOT! And because of precious people like Jothi, MAS has its top notch reputation. So very proud of him and wishing him all the very very best in his future endeavors be it anything =) XOXO

Dear Joe,

We don't know one another but I need your help since you are a Pilot. I stumbled across this blog of yours & wondered if you could help me.

Many years ago, I had a friend who was a co-pilot in MAS. Somehow, I lost contact with him. My numerous cards to his address in Shah Alam was never met with any replies.

So, I thought I'd ask for your help to locate him. His name is REZA FAZRIL LIN. The last I heard from him was in 1999 (if my memory serves me right). Since then, I don't know what happened to him.

I know you joined in 2003. But if you know anyone else who has a good memory and has served MAS longer, perhaps that might help.

If you can help me, please drop me a line at sr@skrine.com or suresh7807@yahoo.com.

Thank you very much.
Btw, good blog, I enjoyed reading it. I know how it feels to come up right from the bottom.

Sulaiman Hassan says:
Dear Soljarh,

To join as a cadet pilot in MAS you have to pass SPM with min of B4 in Eng, Math and Science. You can have higher qualification but it is not an advantage. The selection process is very strict. For your info only 1 in 10 are successful. If you have a diploma from MIAT it will only help you during training not during selection.

thanks Jothiganesh Subramaniam and Pirate for your responses. (sorry for too late to say thank you)

but i don't see any changes regarding to the cadet pilot part. are they stop the hiring the cadet?

any chance to be the MAS cadet pilot today? i'm going to finish my diploma by the end of this year. i'm not happy enough to further my degree coz i only want to be a pilot. (although there is no latest news about the position from MAS).

i saw a 'Trainee Junior Technicians ' in the website. i triggered to join them but is there any calling letter to attend that particular interview or test?

is that just like a open interview? anybody can attend without any calling letter?

or can we join MAS as a trainee junior technician and later 'beg' for the cadet position? we still work for MAS right?

The meals in Malaysia Airlines are memorable to me from KHI-DXB whereas from DXB I didn't leave from the B727 and we went to JED & BEY on the same flight in 1987.Since there were zero passengers from DXB we were expecting the same from JED/BEY for our unscheduled flight which was rather just a few touch downs in the Gulf regions and we the pilots wanted to sit in JED/BEY to have dinner at the airports whereas we had plenty of meals on-board with the cabin crew. Then the pilot dropped me off in DXB two days later to control the destination DXB(which now am controlling from KHI in 2009).From DXB,we went to control LAX(Los Angeles). And the meals throught the journey had been excellent which is similisr to English food which we were expecting to be Chinese on-board.The pilot told me to be careful throughout DXB-LAX which was my duty for Malaysia Airlines and I was holding on to the taste of the meals which was an unforgetable experience.

Sometimes we cabin crew have to contact the passengers at Zia International Airport in Dacca for them to upgrade themselves according to the standards of the airline and the employees at Zia International Airport to take care of the Malaysia & Singapore flights arr/dep while we control all this from Karachi i.e from Karachi to Los Angeles due to the same runway numbers 7L/25R throught Phoenix,Los Angeles,Hong Kong & Karachi.I prefer Malaysia Airlines for their topclass 5 star service to all our destinations worldwide.

At the moment, we are currently in partnership with MARA for sponsorship of cadet pilots. However, the sponsorship is still subject to MAS operational requirement.

Congratulations on flying to Ireland as one of the best destinations besides England and other european countries. We're in Amman,Jordan, try to get to Amman at Queen Alia International Airport with regular flights like we've been trying with the Singapore Airlines to start their regular flights here. And congratulations on flying bto more destinations in England. That's good,we like to see Malaysia Airlines aircraft at almost everywhere and every airport because when we see Malaysia Airlines, our hearts are delighted with happiness and excitement and we would like to see malaysia Airlines either Amman or Damascus as we fly to Beirut which we've found to be in help with Yugoslav airlines for their business with Malaysia Airlines for Beirut.
Thanks,

Salam Sir Abd Mohsin Hj Abd Aziz,

I am one of the trainee cadet pilot currently doing the course in a local flying school. I am 'sponsored' by MARA but I do not have anything related to MAS. I've been wondering... Mara said they did some partnership with MAS but ONLY for cadets in APFT (Kelantan)... I need clarification on this matter. Will us the MARA - sponsored cadet be given a chance to 'approach' MAS or we'll be just like another Private cadets out there? I really need some help. Thanks =)
Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 8:56 AM
Mohamad Zaidi Abdul Rahman says:
Dear Hazman,

Thanks for your interest in Malaysia Airlines.

The cadet pilots involved in MARA-MAS-APFT partnership must go through selection processes coordinated by MAS. Upon graduation from APFT, they will be offered positions with MAS. Other MARA scholars who didn’t go through MAS for their selection criteria will be treated as private students. However, this doesn’t stop them from approaching MAS for direct intake exercise involving students who have obtained CPL/IR and ATPL.

We wish you all the best.
